UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
