Trinidad and Tobago Grants US Military Use to Its Airports Amid Rising Strains with Venezuela

Officials in Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed it will authorize the United States military to operate from its airports shortly. This move comes as heightening regional tensions between the US and nearby Venezuela.

Radar Installation Raises Questions

This statement comes after the deployment of a advanced radar system at an airport in Tobago. Caribbean authorities have insisted the radar's sole use is for combating illegal operations, asserting it is not a springboard for military strikes against another country.

Government opponents argue, however, that the partnership could draw Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's ongoing political strategy against Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro.

Nature of Access and Official Statements

As per a foreign affairs statement, US activities at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, enabling supply replenishment and standard troop rotations. The government offered no specifics on the matter.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously supported US airstrikes targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels in regional waters, strikes that have allegedly resulted in multiple deaths, among them several Trinidadian citizens.

Initial Claims and Later Disclosures

Initially, Persad-Bissessar stated a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was carrying marines to help on a civilian road construction project. Yet, after images surfaced of the defense system, she admitted that at least 100 marines were present in the country, accompanied by the powerful radar.

The radar, believed to be a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is described as aerial monitoring, defense, and counter-fire capabilities.

Proximity and Geography

Trinidad and Tobago lies a mere seven miles from Venezuela at their closest point. It has two primary international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

The airport access agreement follows a prior event in October, when a US naval vessel was stationed in Trinidad's capital, as part of the Trump administration's growing military posture against Venezuela.

In related developments, American legislators have expressed doubts about the legality of the aforementioned maritime strikes and have called for a congressional review.
