When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the side.
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Manchester.
