When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
