The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.
Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
