The Devastating Transformation Only 12 Months Has Brought in America

Twelve months back, the landscape was entirely different. Before the US presidential election, thoughtful citizens could recognize the country's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – however they continued to see it as the United States. A democratic nation. A place where the rule of law meant something. A nation guided by a honorable and decent official, notwithstanding his older age and declining health.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, countless Americans scarcely know the nation we reside in. Persons alleged as illegal immigrants are collected and pushed into transport, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being torn down to build a lavish ballroom. The president is targeting his opponents or perceived antagonists and demanding the justice department transfer a massive sum of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, rebranded the Department of War, has practically freed itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are treated like nobility.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge into autocracy and totalitarianism,” an American historian, commented recently. “Finally, faster than I thought feasible, it occurred in this country.”

Each day begins to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and painful to realize – how severely declined we are, and the speed at which it has happened.

Yet, we understand that Trump was duly elected. Despite his profoundly alarming initial presidency and even after the alerts associated with the awareness of Project 2025 – despite Trump himself said publicly he would rule as a tyrant solely at the start – enough Americans chose him over his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more daunting to realize that we’re only three-quarters of a year under this leadership. What will three more years of this downfall position us? And if that timeframe transforms into an prolonged era, as there is not anyone to restrain this president from opting that a third term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?

Granted, all is not lost. There will be congressional elections the coming year which might bring a different balance of power, in case Democrats regain one or both houses of the legislature. There are public servants who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, for example lawmakers that are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab from the justice department.

And a presidential election three years from now could start our journey toward restoration exactly as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents protesting in urban areas throughout communities, like they performed last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is rising”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or in the Watergate scandal.

During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

He claims he knows the indicators of that resurgence and observes it occurring at present. For proof, he references the widespread marches, the extensive, bipartisan pushback regarding a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept government requirements they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists asleep before specific greed turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, certain violence so disruptive, that it is forced except to rise.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may turn out correct.

In the meantime, the big questions persist: will the nation ever recover? Can it retrieve its standing in the world and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind suggests that the final scenario is true; that everything could be finished. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that means pushing media professionals to live up, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be engaging with political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we lived in a very different place. A year from now? Or in several years? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
