NY Launches Portal for Public to Submit ICE Footage After Detentions of Four US Citizens

The state AG has rolled out a recent reporting form asking locals to provide photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering large-scale demonstrations.

American Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action

A US congressman announced during a news conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a statement.

"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I ask you to provide that material with the authorities. We are pledged to assessing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The platform provides spaces to upload visual evidence of the raid, along with a section to note geographic details. When submitting, submitters must check a option that acknowledges that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or public report."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured more than 50 government officers, occurred in a famous neighborhood of NYC where fake purses, items, goods and additional items are commonly traded en masse – often to sightseers.

Footage of Tuesday's raid depict multiple hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of locals pursued the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the city streets.

Leadership Statements

At a midweek briefing organized with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He said the citizens were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This constitutes a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to utilize the armed forces to prevent violence that they have created."

Broad Criticism

Fury over the federal action quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the operation, along with NY's governor.

"Yet again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," a political candidate stated.

New York City community groups expressed outrage too.

"ICE targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to public safety and focused completely on intimidating residents and communities," stated the leader of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

Official guidelines bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has claimed it will not arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Recent Pattern

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations targeting ICE are ubiquitous including claims of aggression and cruel conditions.

Latest, a document provided by legal entities claimed medical neglect of women with child in ICE facilities.
