Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the scene and another man who fled following the explosion was located not long after. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location displayed the building left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the residence was under an court order due to debts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed local news, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
